States of the USA
The Flag of the United States of America has developed along the expansion of the USA. The first national flag (Grand Union Flag) was used at the time of the Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) and officially used since 1777 in the 13 star version. Over time more stares were added to represent the new states in the union. The number of stripes was increased to 15 after the entry of Vermont and Kentucky in the Union (1795) but later reduced to 13 again as a tribute to the 13 original colonies. The last change to the US flag was made in 1960 after Hawaii got the status of a own state within the United States. Since then the Flag has 50 stars. Washintong D.C. does not count as a own state. The full list of historical changes can be found here. In the American Civil War the Confederated States had own flags, but the Confederation never passed an act on that issue - so there was no official Confederative flag. The most common design can be seen here. |
