American Cuisines

Huge and hearty are just two words to describe the cuisine you can expect to find in America. Each state has its own specialities and signature dishes, but you can always be guaranteed that the portions will be huge and there will be a lot of choice.

For first time visitors to America, the food sizes and variety might seem strange to begin with. Hotels often serve up an unusual array of foods for breakfast. If you have booked into a large commercial hotel you might be able to look up the restaurant's menu. So between browsing tourist guide sites or playing on the PartyPoker site, you may be surprised to see that the American’s enjoy not only their typical breakfast foods, like cereal and fruit, but also bacon with pancakes, chips and even fish fillets. It will certainly kick start your day. But what other cuisines can you expect to find?

If you like hearty dishes, then Colorado is the state for you. The western state sees restaurants themed like old cowboy bars, complete with saloon doors, animal heads on the walls and cow hide chairs. Their signature dish is steak or bbq ribs, served with fries, beans, corn on the cob, coleslaw and sour dough bread. All of this can be washed down with a ginger beer.

Cities like New York on the other hand are quite the opposite. There are many one off or expensive cafés and restaurants. However, New York is also the home of street corner stalls, which sell giant hot pretzels, hot dogs and chilli-dogs. They are very popular with commuters and tourists who are in a rush.

Typical American diners however, can be found in almost any city. They promote themselves on their hearty big meals at very reasonable prices. Breakfasts can include maple and bacon pancakes or even steak, egg and chips, while desserts range from rich Mississippi Mud pie to cheesecake.
